SDACommunity

The Systemic Design Association provides an international community home for the wide range of designers and scholars leading emerging practices, design-led systems research, and advanced design methods evolving from systems thinking and design.  Join the SDA today to access a range of unique tools and benefits, or renew to keep your relationship to the RSD community.

SDAPractice

Systemic design has moved toward pragmatic practice. By sharing methods and cases through the annual RSD symposia, practitioners are building a common understanding. SDA creates opportunities for dialogue that contribute to guiding principles for systemic design practice.

SDATheory

Systemic design draws on the extant base and evolution of ideas in systems theory and complexity as rich sources of transdisciplinary science and discourse. Uniquely in design studies, systemic design started in educational and experimental approaches to discovering a “requisite design” with power to new services and systems in complex environments.

SDAPUBLICATIONS

For most of a decade the RSD Symposium has yielded a rich trove of design research in this developing field. RSD authors have published studies in partner journals and edited volumes. With the announcement of the SDA journal Contexts, a home discipline source for publication is provided, building on well-known open access publishing tools and practices. Along with Contexts the SDA editorial team announces Briefs (essays), Case Reports (practice studies), and Visualizations (research-based system maps).

SDAPUBLICATIONS

The SDA publication process differs from the traditional scientific publication process. It is inclusive, with a low-entry threshold and supportive feedback from an engaged peer review panel. The process has been developed and tested and has shown to result in a high level of quality proceedings and long term engagement in the systemic design community of practice.

Annual Symposium

RELATING SYSTEMS THINKING AND DESIGN

The RSD symposia have produced a series of publications as proceedings and journal articles beginning with RSD2 in 2013.  Each symposium draws new studies, theoretical work and practices from across many disciplines contributing to complex design issues, social systems and complex policy, socioecological sustainability, critical cultural and development perspectives, and emerging practices and methodology. The first RSD Symposium was held in 2012 as a two-day seminar organized by Birger Sevaldson and Marit Helgesen at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Since then, a symposium has been held each year, hosted in by universities in different countries: Norway, Canada, India, Italy, Norway, the UK, and the US. A scientific review committee for each RSD symposium is organized by the co-chairs of each conference, with continuity across symposia and publications provided by past chairs and SDA board members. Over 950 symposia presentations and papers are available on RSDsymposium.org—a robust, searchable repository for leading thinking on systemic design.
